At a glance

  • A backpacking packing list should describe your pack, not a catalog
  • A bikepacking packing list is several small bags, not one pile
  • Clone a 3-day gravel trip instead of reprinting an REI checklist
  • Offline and private: no account at the trailhead

Backpackers and bikepackers already know the gear. The miss is location. The stove is not “camping.” It is in the bottom of the pack, or in the saddle bag, or split so the fuel bottle stays off the sleeping quilt. A list that ignores where an item lives is a shopping list. You need a loadout.

This guide treats every pack, stuff sack, frame bag, and handlebar roll as a bag you own. You write what actually went in. You clone the closest past trip. You do not add a tent you sold, a bear can you borrow, or a GPS you do not carry because the phone is enough.

Where the gear lives

On foot, the backpack is the bag. Some people add a hip pack or a camera cube. Those are bags too. On the bike, the system is the point: frame bag for dense tools and food, handlebar bag for the bulky sleep kit, saddle bag for clothes and shelter, top-tube or stem bag for snacks you can reach while rolling. Adventure Cycling and REI both describe that split. The list should match it.

If you dump everything into “bike gear,” you will pack the multi-tool twice and forget the spare quick link because it “felt like it was in the frame bag.” A bikepacking packing list with one row per bag lets you stand over the bike and ask “is the saddle bag done?” the same way a family asks “is the blue backpack done?”

Overnight backpacking works the same way. Rain jacket in the lid. Sleep system in the bottom. Food in the brain or a front pocket. A printable backpacking packing list that says “jacket, bag, food” without pockets trains you to rummage. Rummaging at a trailhead in the rain is how you leave the headlamp on the kitchen table.

Why master lists fail

Master lists are thorough. That is the problem. They include a stove, a filter, a quilt, and a puffy because those are categories, not because they are in your garage. Ultralight hikers who cowboy camp still get a tent row. Bikepackers who stop in motels still get a bear hang. After you skip ten rows, you stop trusting the page.

Weather and mileage generators have the same smell as family vacation apps: they invent quantities. Three days does not always mean three shirts if you are in a wool rotation. A 40-mile gravel day does not always mean a second chain if you just replaced one. The honest list is the last similar trip, edited by two items, not a PDF with a hundred checkboxes.

Paper still works for a first shake-down. After that, the paper is a snapshot of a trip you are no longer taking. Save the loadout that survived the weekend. Clone that.

Frame bag, bar bag, saddle bag

A practical bikepacking packing list, bag by bag:

  • Frame bag. Tools, tubes, food you do not want bouncing, battery bank. Heavy and low.
  • Handlebar bag. Sleeping bag or quilt, pad if it fits, maybe the shelter body. Bulky and light.
  • Saddle bag. Clothes, extra layers, sometimes the tent or poles.
  • Top-tube or stem. Phone food, sunscreen, a tube if you want it in reach.

Your split may differ. That is the point. Write your split, not a magazine’s. If you use a backpack instead of a saddle bag, the backpack is a bag in the list. If you strap poles to the fork, that strap setup can be a row on the bike bag you consider “the bike,” or a note on the shelter bag. Do not invent a bag you do not clip on.

Backpacking equivalents: main bag, lid, hip belt pockets, maybe a water vest. Overnight vs three-day is two loadouts, not one list with dimmed rows. Clone the three-day when you go out Thursday. Clone the overnight when you leave after work Friday.

How Packing Loadout maps

Packing Loadout does not care if the bag is a suitcase or a saddle pack. You add the bags you own. You save what went in. The next trip clones each bag’s closest past loadout. You tick items into the right bag. It will not add a tent you do not own.

Household names still help if you travel as a pair: whose quilt, whose stove. For a solo overnight, one name is enough. Families who also take suitcases can keep those bags in the same app; see the family packing list. People who fly every week with a roller can keep that habit too: reuse last trip.

Android. $2.99 once. No subscription, no ads. Optional JSON backup. No Twofold cloud. Read privacy if you want the same promise in legal language.

Airplane mode on trail

You already put the phone in airplane mode to save battery. A packing list that needs a login at the trailhead is useless. Packing Loadout is local. You can tick the stove while you still have kitchen light, then open the same list in the parking lot with no signal.

Privacy is quieter than it is for family medical notes, but route names, addresses of a trailhead, and a list of electronics still do not need to live in a travel-app account. Phone first also means you are not carrying a paper checklist that turns to pulp in the frame bag.

Paid once fits this use. You do not take a subscription into the woods. You take a bag you already paid for and a list that does not expire.

Questions

How should I organize a bikepacking packing list?
Give each bag its own list: frame bag, handlebar bag, saddle bag. Heavy tools in the frame. Sleep kit in the bar or saddle. Do not keep one pile labeled bike.
What is wrong with a printable backpacking packing list?
Master lists include shelter and clothing you may not own, and they ignore which pocket holds the item. Start from your pack and write what went in.
Can I use a packing list app offline on trail?
Packing Loadout stays on the phone. Airplane mode is fine. No login at the trailhead.
Should a packing list add gear I do not own?
No. If you do not own a tent, do not list one. Add a row after you pack a new piece the first time.
Can I clone a 3-day gravel trip?
Yes. Save the loadout after a clean weekend. The next similar trip copies each bag's closest past loadout.
